Tiki 1.5 Released – PHP-based Wiki/CMS/Weblog Tool

http://edtechdev.org/blog/archives/001025.html

“Tiki 1.5 (Regulus) has been released. Tiki is a PHP & MySQL-based Wiki/CMS/blog tool. Version 1.5 adds numerous new features,… ”

I can’t wait to see this for myself. The collision of Wikis and blogs (and Zope-like CMSes) seemed at once both an obvious thing, and yet until I actually see it I’m not sure what it will herald, as I am still trying to wrap my head around the unique properties of each of these on their own. – SWL

CIC Learning Management Systems (LMS) Survey (Oct 2002)

http://telr.osu.edu/surveys/cic-lms/reportOct02.cfm

This is a survey, run out of Ohio State University on the 12 large institutions that make up the Committee for Institutional Cooperation on the status of the CMS/LMS systems and plans. We run a similar survey on a regular basis with the Educational Technology Coordinators group here in B.C., but it was facinating for me to see this for these large institutions in the U.S. – SWL

Data Harmony – Text Management Software and Services

More from the knowledge management field, but this product is an example of how to integrate machine indexing activities with human classification. This is what I’m looking for in the field of learning object meta-data – a way to not only add a meta-data field contribution as a human in addition o ones generated automatically through various indexing algorithms, but in addition a way for the software to then aggregate the various human contributions so that additional patterns and classifications can be found. Does this make any sense? – SWL

Came across this site because this fellow is going to be one of the keynotes at the online elearning conference mentioned below being hosted out of U of C. There is a mass of resources here on game-based simulations. This is kind of a pet interest because of a project to develop an online environmental assessment simulation game I was involved with years ago. If only I had know about this guy and this mass of materials back then – SWL

University of Calgary Virtual Conference: Best Practices in e-Learning – August 13-14

http://elearn.ucalgary.ca/conference/about.html

“The focus of the conference is on the best practices in e-Learning in both education and training. The latest e-Learning technologies and practices will be used in this conference to make this event accessible to more people then a traditional face-to-face conference could be.”

Now I have the wriggly 3 1/2 year old on my lap, but I wanted to post this as a reminder to self, and also because it sounds interesting. – SWL

The challenge of getting people to author metadata

2003/02/25.html#a795

“Here’s a presentation on “The Economy of Distributed Metadata Authoring” by  Stefano Mazzocchi . A few passages ring especially true to me.

First Law of Metadata Quality:

  • Artificial intelligence is just that: artificial!
  • So: for a system that feels smart to humans, you need human-crafted metadata

Suggestions:

  • Do all efforts to make instant return on the investment of metadata authoring
  • Don’t ask too much
  • Be smart but not smarter

Some of the same wisdom went into the design of the Internet Topic Exchange.”

Don’t you just love when,

VLE Discussion Forum

Kind of a wacky site out of the U.K. It seems to be a wiki dedicated to Virtual Learning Environments, Brit-speak for Course Management Systems. As far as I can tell it is run out of The Learning and Teaching Support Network, a UK wide network that promotes high quality learning and teaching in higher education through the development and transfer of good practices in all subject disciplines. Sadly, it wasn’t immediately apparent to me how, in the spirit of all things wiki, one could contribute, as some of the material was dated. Still, worth a look, if only to stumble across even more products in this space that you’ve never heard of before. – SWL
